Negotiations Timeline
- Early-April, 2009: Commencement of negotiations with unions (scheduling determined jointly by United and each union)
- April 6: Opening conversations with AFA
- April 7: Opening conversations with IAM
- April 9: Opening conversations with ALPA
- April 10: Opening conversations with PAFCA
- April 14: Opening conversations with IBT
- April 15: Opening conversations with IFPTE
- August, 2009: United and all of the U.S. unions except IFPTE may jointly request mediation with the National Mediation Board (NMB) if no agreement is reached. The NMB may defer mediation if it believes that the parties should continue direct negotiations.
- December 31, 2009: collective bargaining agreement (CBA) becomes amendable for IFPTE
- January 1, 2010: CBAs become amendable for ALPA, IAM, IBT and PAFCA (existing contract terms remain in effect throughout negotiations)
- January 7, 2010: CBA becomes amendable for AFA (existing contract terms remain in effect throughout negotiations)
