Negotiations Update 2012/08/24

The negotiating committees for United and the International Association of Machinists (IAM) met from Aug. 20 through Aug. 24 in Chicago to continue expedited negotiations covering the Fleet, Passenger, Stores and Maintenance Instructor workgroups. The process is moving forward with open discussion among the participants and positive movement on substantive issues.

Three core sub-committees met each day to explore the topics of Hours of Service/Overtime, Sick Leave/Time Off/ Vacations/Holidays, and Classifications/Vacancies/Reduction in Force & Recall. The parties are also exchanging information relevant to the negotiations and engaging subject matter experts in their discussions.

The National Mediation Board continues to devote significant resources to our expedited negotiations. NMB mediators assisted the sub-committees throughout the week and regularly briefed United and IAM leadership on process issues and the progress. Next week, the NMB will conduct training for all participants in “Facilitated Problem Solving.”
